Meet Joanne Lai |

Our bodies hold stories of joy, pain, stress, resilience, and transformation. Somatic therapy combines movements with talk therapy to gently guide you back to your body’s innate wisdom. Through mindful connection and awareness, we'll explore how your emotions and past experiences are stored within your physical body. Together, we'll create a safe space where you can listen to these embodied memories, releasing tension and uncovering a profound sense of peace and wholeness. Your body will help lead the way to healing and living authentically.

Services offered

For those outside of Fresno, I offer virtual therapy across California. Online therapy provides the flexibility and convenience to receive the mental health support you need from the comfort of your own home. You don't have to allocate time to commute, which makes scheduling easier. Online therapy offers the same quality of care as in-person sessions, allowing you to work through challenges and achieve your goals, no matter where you are.

Ongoing stress or burnout can feel like a relentless tide, pulling you under and leaving you exhausted and overwhelmed. In somatic therapy, I help gently reconnect you with your body’s wisdom, so that you can release stored tension that’s built up from stress. Together, we’ll cultivate practices that nourish your energy and restore balance, so you can tolerate stress and rediscover your joy.

Stress and Burnout

Areas of focus

Cultural concerns often intersect with heritage, identity, and belonging, creating a complex landscape of emotions. In somatic therapy, I honor your cultural background and explore how it shapes your experiences and feelings. We can address any cultural challenges or conflicts, helping you to feel seen, understood, and deeply connected to who you are.

Cultural Concerns

Identity work is an inward journey, a discovery of who you truly are beneath the layers of expectation and societal norms. In somatic therapy, we listen to your body’s signals, unraveling the stories it holds about your identity. Together, we’ll nurture your authentic self, fostering a sense of wholeness and alignment between who you are inside and how you show up in the world.

Identity Work

Relationships are the threads that weave through the fabric of our lives, yet they can sometimes become tangled with misunderstandings and hurt. We'll explore the patterns held within your body that influence how you connect with others. By bringing awareness to these dynamics, we can heal past wounds and cultivate healthier, more fulfilling relationships, rooted in empathy and mutual respect.

Relationship Issues

Past wounds and trauma leave imprints on both the heart and the body, often lingering long after the experiences have passed. In somatic therapy, we gently work with experiences, allowing your body to release the pain and restore a sense of safety and peace. This healing process empowers you to reclaim your life from the shadows of the past, opening the door to a future filled with hope and possibility.

Past Wounds and Trauma

Somatic therapy offers significant benefits for women’s health by addressing the connection between the body and emotional well-being. Many women’s health issues, such as those related to reproductive health, pregnancy, menopause, and body image, involve both physical and emotional stress. Somatic therapy helps release stored tension and unresolved emotions often held in the body, reducing stress and improving coping.

Women's Health

By increasing physical awareness, somatic treatment fosters a healthier relationship and deeper connection with your body. It also provides valuable mental health support during life transitions like pregnancy and menopause.

Women’s issues encompass a broad range of topics deeply intertwined with the unique experiences of womanhood. These often shape a woman's emotional landscape from navigating the complexities of relationships, intimate partner violence, health, and motherhood to addressing the challenges of self-esteem, body image, eating disorders, infertility, discrimination, and societal expectations.

I take these various experiences into account as well as your intersecting identities when treating anxiety, postpartum depression, trauma, or other mental health concerns. I’ll empower you to embrace your strengths, heal from past wounds, and find your authentic voice. Whatever your journey entails, I’ll walk beside you, nurturing resilience and offering guidance toward a life of fulfillment and self-compassion.

FAQs about

The choice of a therapist is completely up to you. Many women find comfort and connection in working with a female therapist, especially when exploring deeply personal or gender-specific issues. A female therapist might offer a shared understanding of the challenges women face in society and at home.

However, the most important factor is finding someone you feel safe with, who resonates with your unique needs. Regardless of their gender identity, the right therapist is someone who listens with empathy, offers insight, and supports your growth.

Is it better for a female to have a female therapist?

Navigating mental healthcare can be confusing, especially when it comes to understanding different professional titles. A psychologist typically holds a doctoral degree in psychology and may specialize in assessment and research, as well as therapy. A therapist, on the other hand, can encompass a variety of professionals, including counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists, each with their own specialized training.

While credentials are important, the true heart of therapy lies in the connection between you and your therapist. Choose someone who not only has the expertise but also makes you feel heard, understood, and valued.

What is a psychologist vs. a therapist?

I’m here to support you on your journey within.

I'm honored and grateful each time I'm invited to accompany a woman on their path. While we share common aspects of life and emotions as women, we each have unique identities, strengths, traits, goals, and lived experiences that make us who we are.

I believe that treatment offers you a unique space where you can learn to connect with all these parts of yourself and create meaningful and positive changes in your life. If you’re looking for women's therapy in California, I’d love to speak with you. Please reach out for a free consultation.
